People helping people - what a beautiful thing!
LEAD is focusing on two initiatives this month; battling food insecurities and closing the digital divide.
On Saturday, LEAD hosted a drive-thru food distribution and fed more than 500 families. This work could not have been done without amazing volunteers. Many thanks to each of you who gave of your time to help battle food insecurities.
It was a delight to see and work with our faithful LEAD volunteers and a number of community partners, including groups from Community Empowerment Solutions, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, University of Houston, University of Houston - Clear Lake, and YES Prep Southside. Everyone worked together efficiently, quickly, and patiently. Thank you for signing up, showing up, and serving cheerfully. LEAD is most grateful to the Houston Food Bank and Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz of District D for making this opportunity possible. We thrive because of community support and partnerships.
Ten pallets of food were delivered to YES Prep Southside. Volunteers packed the food into individual family boxes. Houston Police Department diligently directed traffic and ushered lines of cars through our distribution lines. Families received:
- Fresh produce: cabbage, zucchini, oranges, apples, pears, and watermelon
- Protein: whole chickens, breaded chicken breasts, pork, and cheese
- Drinks: cases of water and orange juice
- Nonperishable items: pasta, rice, beans, and more!
In addition to loading cars, we connected with families and waved to student LEADers. Together, we fed some of Houston's most underserved families and reduced non-academic barriers to success.
LEAD continues to provide weekly life skills classes and monthly Saturday sessions to some of Houston's most underserved youth. Many of our students are still without technology and do not have the tools they need to succeed. The consequences of falling behind are dire to a child's development and detrimental to our society. There's still an opportunity to be a part of the solution! Let's equip students with the tools they need to succeed. Donate $250 to provide a student LEADer with a laptop. Thanks for closing the digital divide and reducing non-academic barriers to success. Your support changes lives for the better.
